How did another weekend come around so quickly? Not that I'm objecting, however. This week it's my goal to save you money (apologies to Mattress Mac). Two of the events below are free to everyone, and the third is free for kids 12 and under. We have a "scary" movie, a Christmas musical (can you believe it?), and a great big dog show. Surely at least one of these will suit you. Let's do something with the kids to combat that midsummer, "I don't have anything to do" state of mind.
I'm taking it for granted now that you have a Summer of Fun Pass for each of the children (K-12). I've mentioned it enough, so don't prove me wrong. With free event admissions and free METRO travel for them, there's absolutely no excuse to stay home. METRO's Trip Planner will help you reach your destinations, so go, go, go. You can stay home when those rainy winter days are here.
Event: "Friday Flicks on The Lawn – Jurassic World." GreenStreet hosts a free big-screen movie one Friday a month, and this month's offering is "Jurassic World," one of those dinosaur romps that we all love. Bring your blankets/lawn chairs to The Lawn, GreenStreet's central open-air green space.
When: Friday at 9 p.m.
Where: GreenStreet, 1201 Fannin St.
Bus – 6 Jensen/Greens, 11 Almeda/Lyons, 40 Telephone/Heights, 41 Kirby/Polk, 51 Hardy-Kelley, 52 Hardy-Ley, 137 Northshore Express
METRORail – Red Line (exit Main Street Square or Bell Station)
Event: 40th Annual World Series of Dog Shows. There is so much to see at this entertaining and educational event - dog performances and exhibitions, races and conformation judging, seminars, displays, and shopping. There's truly something for every member of the family. I love the event's tagline - "Come. Sit. Stay." - because you'll want to do just that. You can buy daily tickets at the gate with cash only - kids 12 and under get in free. Weekend one-day tickets for ages 13 or older cost $15.00.
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: NRG Center, 8400 Kirby Dr.
Getting there*: Bus – 84 Buffalo Speedway
METRORail – Red Line (exit Stadium Park/Astrodome Station)
Event: "The Adventures of Santa Claus – Christmas in July!" It's never the wrong time of year to enjoy the Christmas spirit. This is an original holiday musical for the kids, based on a classic story by L. Frank Baum. It depicts Santa as a little boy who discovers that his calling is to bring joy to the world. The performance is free, no tickets are necessary, and no reservations can be made.
When: Saturday at 11 a.m.
Where: Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr.
Bus – 5 Southmore, 56 Airline/Montrose
METRORail - Red Line (exit Memorial Hermann Hospital/Houston Zoo Station)
