Houston is home to more refugees than any other city in the nation. Since 1978, refugees forced to flee their homes have been rebuilding their lives here and contributing to our city.
This Saturday, we have a chance to learn more about our refugees and honor their courage and determination. Celebrate World Refugee Day from 4 to 7 p.m. on June 17 at Levy Park. It's located at 3801 Eastside St., just south of Richmond Avenue between Kirby Drive and Buffalo Speedway.
Bring the whole family to this free event. You'll be able to hear musicians, see dancers, explore a resource/artisan fair and sample foods from refugee and immigrant-owned restaurants.
METRO will be there with its Discover Bus. Climb aboard and learn about our many services, including how to use a METRO Q® Fare Card. Apply for a free Summer of Fun Pass for all students, K-12th grade. This Summer of Fun Pass allows students to ride METRO free until Sept. 1.
For more ways to honor refugees, become an advocate for newcomers in your community with this toolkit, or take a free, online course to show you how to make friends or volunteer with refugees.
See you at Levy Park as we welcome neighbors, old and new. You can ride the bus to get there - the 25 Richmond or the 84 Buffalo Speedway take you right to the park.
