METRO is celebrating National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 15, by offering free rides for everyone on local buses, Park & Ride buses and METRORail.
National Dump the Pump Day encourages people to ride public transportation instead of driving – and save money, reduce your carbon footprint and avoid the stress of navigating traffic.
"Taking mass transit instead of driving saves riders more than $816 per month on average," said Tom Lambert, METRO president & CEO. "METRO is thrilled to join with nearly 100 agencies across the country as we encourage everyone to consider the savings and economic opportunity public transportation provides."
The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) sponsors this day and points out that when a two-person household downsizes to one car, that household can save on average more than $9,000 a year.
Public transit also helps communities grow and prosper. For every $1 invested in public transportation, $4 is returned in economic returns, according to APTA.
Our street teams will be meeting and greeting you at our Park & Ride lots and select transit centers – helping first-time riders and thanking our regular riders. To show our appreciation, we'll be awarding prizes to customers every hour that day, starting at 7 a.m.
To enter the drawing, take a selfie while riding the system and upload it to METRO's Twitter, Facebook or Instagram pages. Prizes will be provided by our Dump the Pump partners, which include Houston BCycle, Children's Museum of Houston, The Health Museum and Your Pie.
So join us this Thursday, ride METRO, take selfies, and see if you're the lucky winner. Everyone can win by riding mass transit.
