Weekend Fun with METRO: May 26-May 29

This is a guest post by Darla Bell, manager of Strategic Analysis in Communications & Marketing.

Don't you think it's time for a long, holiday weekend?  Memorial Day is here, with an extra day to relax and have fun.  Since you're sure to have at least one cookout to attend, here are two events that you can enjoy on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, so you can fit them into your schedule.

Go to the Symphony's POPS concert for some great Broadway music one night, and sing along to Motown hits at Theatre Under the Stars (free!) on another evening.  But let's not forget the reason for Memorial Day - the Houston National Cemetery has an honor ceremony on Monday morning, and METRO offers free bus service there all day.

You can travel to these events and many more, using METRO's bus and light-rail network.  You know what to do - plan your trip with our Trip Planner.  And – drum roll - we have something new and neat to make the upcoming summer even more fun – free fares for K-12 students from June 1 through September 1, so you can take even more family excursions while saving money.  Here's the link to information about the Summer of Fun Pass – check it out.  Enjoy this three-day weekend!

Event:  Houston Symphony – Classic Broadway.  This concert series is Michael Krajewski's final bow as Houston Symphony's POPS conductor, so it's worth attending both for the wonderful music and because he's such a great entertainer.  The music celebrates Broadway's Golden Age – think Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Gershwin, and Lerner and Lowe.  You'll enjoy tunes that you've loved for a long time.  Tickets can be purchased through the website.

When: Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Jones Hall for the Performing Arts, 615 Louisiana St.

Getting there*:

Bus – 32 Renwick/San Felipe (exit Travis & Rusk), 44 Acres Homes (exit Louisiana & Walker), 82 Westheimer (exit Travis & Rusk), 102 Bush IAH Express (exit Travis or Milam & Rusk), 160 Memorial City Express/161 Wilcrest Express/162 Memorial Express (exit Smith & Rusk)

METRORail – Red Line (exit Central Station), Green Line and Purple Line (exit Theater District Station)

Event:  "Dancin' in the Street…Motown and More Review."  You have three nights to enjoy this performance of classic Motown hits, and it's sure to make your weekend something to remember.  The venue calls it "Houston's biggest celebration of soul," and you'll be entertained by singers, dancers, the Bacement Soul Orchestra, and a Stevie Wonder tribute.  It's a free event, but you need tickets for the covered seating (see the website for details).  Dust off your dancing shoes - I predict groovin' in the aisles.

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8:15 p.m.

Where: Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr.

Getting there*:

METRORail – Red Line (Museum District Station)

Event: Memorial Day Ceremony.  Experience the true spirit of Memorial Day by attending the ceremony honoring deceased U. S. military service men and women at the Hemicycle in the Houston National Cemetery.  Military and school organizations will provide a patriotic tribute to those who served, including taps, cannon and rifle salutes, and a parade of remembrance.  The event is free and the public is welcome.

When: Monday, 9:30 a.m.

Where: Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr.

Getting there:

Bus: 96 Veterans Memorial (exit Veterans Memorial/Woodsdale)

The 96 Veterans Memorial bus route will provide hourly service to the Houston National Cemetery from 5:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Memorial Day.
