It's the end of the month (already!) and I've got a weekend of firsts planned for you. To start, it's the first weekend to see the new production of Les Miserables at the Hobby Center. Then, Saturday is opening night for Discovery Green's new art installation, and it sounds beautiful. To finish the weekend, let's get the family up first thing on Sunday morning for animal photography at the zoo.
And to continue the theme, METRO should be your first choice for transportation to reach all these great activities. All these locations are easily reachable by bus or rail, and the Trip Planner can set you up with just the directions you need. Don't forget that the students in the family can continue to use the student Q card they got for the Summer of Fun program and ride for half fare – just add money to the same card. Hold onto that card; summer will be back again before we know it. Meanwhile, keep enjoying your weekends.
Event: Les Miserables. For your viewing pleasure, here's a newly revamped production of one of the most beloved hit Broadway shows. Still the world's most popular musical, it's the story of Jean Valjean, who is pursued for decades across post-Revolutionary France by the relentless Inspector Javert. Saturday's matinee performance is open-captioned, and Sunday's matinee is audio-described. Tickets start at $35, but you may find cheaper, better, or hard-to-get seats on TicketNetwork's resale website.

Event: Photo Day at the Zoo. Here's something to entice the photographers in your family to rise and shine early. This Sunday, the zoo is allowing photographers of all skill levels to take great animal photos before the zoo opens and the crowds appear. The temperatures should be cooler, too, so the animals will be more active than they are in the heat of the day. Zookeepers will talk about the featured animals and answer questions, and a continental breakfast will be provided. Register online through Sept. 29 at a discounted price, or at the zoo on photo day. Also, don't forget that the monthly, free Tuesday afternoon at the zoo is this coming week on Oct. 2 – admission is free from noon until closing.
