Safety check: Stadium Park/Astrodome Station

This is a guest post by Brent Taylor, a social media specialist with METRO.

It’s football season, which means tens of thousands of people will descend upon NRG Stadium on game days to support our Houston Texans. So, on a rainy Tuesday, I made my way to the Red Line to make a quick safety check at the station.

As will be the case for many football fans, my trip began in my personal vehicle; I drove to Fannin South Park & Ride. On game days, fans can pay $15 to park, which includes rail fare to and from Stadium Park/Astrodome Station, just one station north of the Park & Ride.

On a day with a major event, there will be METRO employees, police officers, and others on site to assist the quick loading and unloading of rail vehicles. Always have your fare item ready before you reach the platform. If you have not yet purchased a fare, you may do so at the Ticket Vending Machine on the platform, or simply download the Q Mobile Ticketing app and activate the tickets upon boarding.

Once I arrived at the station, I saw a few incidents worth noting:

  • Stay off the phone when walking near the tracks. This particular station is located near the intersection of Fannin and Holly Hall, with the rail running parallel to Fannin. There are plenty of variables that could lead to a collision, so don’t add to it by not paying attention.
  • Be mindful of other passengers. While on-site, I noticed a passenger who was using a white cane with a red tip. While not completely blind (she was wearing glasses), the passenger was not fully sighted. Passengers like her may need extra time to navigate the platform or board the train.
  • Don’t run. One passenger was determined to make the train that was pulling in as she arrived, so she made a beeline for the rail. Particularly during a large event, our trains run so often that it isn’t worth the risk of injury (or worse) just to make the soonest train.

There are eight Texans home games this season. You can see the season schedule here.
