This is a guest post by Darla Bell, manager of Strategic Analysis in Communications & Marketing.

Lucky us – for this weekend, I've found some ways to have fun with the family and not break the bank.  Here are two free concerts, one with local musicians and one featuring the Houston Symphony, and a spectacular magic show with a promo code for 50 percent off tickets.

Compound the savings by using public transit to reach weekend fun – but you knew that already, didn't you?  Compared with rising summer gas prices and not-so-cheap parking fees, METRO is a real deal.  Regular fare is just $1.25 each way, and all the students in the family can ride free with the Summer of Fun Q Card.

Visit the Trip Planner to get the routes for your trip, and you're on your way.  You can thank me by having a wonderful time this weekend.

Event: Listen Local: Music on the Plaza.  The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, offers free summer music concerts in its new outdoor space, The Brown Foundation, Inc. Plaza.  Check out the new plaza, and enjoy food truck refreshments and live music by local bands and musicians.  It's a fun way to finish off the work week.

When: Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Where: The Brown Foundation, Inc. Plaza, 5101 Montrose Blvd.

Getting there*:

Bus – 56 Airline/Montrose, 65 Bissonnet

Event: Houston Symphony Summer Symphony Nights.  It's the first weekend for ExxonMobil Summer Symphony Nights, bringing you free, family-friendly concerts under the stars.  This weekend's performance includes Gershwin's "Concerto in F," a jazz-tinged work full of energy and high spirits, and Vaughan Williams' "Symphony No. 2, A London Symphony."  Free tickets are available for the covered seating area (see the website for details), but there's always open seating on the hill.

When: Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Where: Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr.

Getting there*:

Bus – 56 Airline/Montrose

METRORail – Red Line (exit Hermann Park/Rice U)

Event: The Champions of Magic.  The whole family will be on the edge of their seats at this mysterious magic show, which should be one of the best you'll see.  Five world-class illusionists will perform disappearances, levitation, teleportation – and then a heart-stopping finale – in this 2018 national tour.  Tickets start at $24, but use promo code Illusion50 for 50 percent off tickets when you buy four or more.

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1 and 6 p.m.

Where: Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby St.

Getting there*:

Bus –  20 Canal/Memorial, 30 Clinton/Ella, 32 Renwick/San Felipe, 44 Acres Homes, 82 Westheimer, 85 Antoine/Washington, 102 Bush IAH Express, 160 Memorial City Express, 161 Wilcrest Express, 162 Memorial Express

METRORail – Green and Purple lines (exit Theater District Station)
