Weekend fun with METRO: June 1-3

This is a guest post by Darla Bell, manager of Strategic Analysis in Communications & Marketing.

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for another weekend.  I've found a variety of events that you and the family can enjoy.  Let's start with an evening outdoors, watching performances by a local dance company.  I'm also recommending the newest production of The Sound of Music, as well as an afternoon at a museum, learning how art is created.  It all adds up to a quiet, relaxing weekend, and we all appreciate those.

METRO loves to help you relax.  There's nothing more relaxing than sitting back and letting someone else drive you around town.  Go to our Trip Planner for all the information you'll need to ride METRO to this weekend's events, and remember that this is the first weekend that kids, K through college, can ride everywhere for free.  Nice bonus, right?  If you didn't know about that, it's the Summer of Fun program – click and learn about it.  Have a terrific weekend!

Event: Sizzling Summer Dance.  Spend a pleasant evening under the stars watching the season's final dance concert from METdance.  You'll see a variety of works from different cultural backgrounds, movement styles and inspirations.  It's a suitable program for all ages, and the MET too Youth Company will participate in the performance.  Two of the works are brand new, one a world premiere.  Live music will be furnished by Two Star Symphony.

When: Friday at 8:30 p.m.

Where: Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr.

Getting there*:

Bus – 56 Airline/Montrose

METRORail – Red Line (exit Hermann Park/Rice U Station)

Event: The Sound of Music.  Houston's Society for the Performing Arts bring us a fresh production of the beloved musical, directed by a three-time Tony Award winner.  Everyone loves the romantic story of Maria and the von Trapp family.  This production features the familiar Rodgers & Hammerstein music, and is here in town for one weekend only.

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m.

Where: Jones Hall for the Performing Arts, 615 Louisiana St.

Getting there*:

Bus – 30 Clinton/Ella, 32 Renwick/San Felipe, 44 Acres Homes, 82 Westheimer, 102 Bush IAH Express, 160 Memorial City Express, 161 Wilcrest Express, 162 Memorial Express, Greenlink Circulator - Orange

METRORail – Green and Purple lines (exit Theater District Station)

Event: Family Discovery Day at Rienzi.  Have you ever wondered how the artists created the artwork that you see at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston?  Come to Rienzi on Saturday, and you can learn about the techniques that they used, then experiment with the tools and practice sketching in the galleries.  You'll learn about painting, porcelain, sketching and art conservation.  This activity is free with your admission, and admission is free for ages 12 and younger.  It sounds like an unusual and interesting way to spend an afternoon.

When: Saturday, 1-4 p.m.

Where:  Rienzi, 1406 Kirby Dr.

Getting there*:

Bus – 41 Kirby/Polk
