Weekend Fun with METRO: May 11-14

This is a guest post by Darla Bell, manager of Strategic Analysis in Communications & Marketing.

It's Mother's Day weekend, so let's celebrate Mom with some events she'll enjoy.  With my suggestions, you can take her to the ballet (for free), or to a theatre production.  In addition, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is offering free admission to all its locations on Mother's Day, so you can visit the main building, Bayou Bend or Rienzi (or all three).  Don't forget to take her to brunch or dinner, and you still have time to buy a nice gift or some flowers (hint, hint).

Heads-up for next weekend – the zoo is hosting a horticultural tour of the grounds next Sunday, and tickets to events like that go fast.  You can register on the website now, and the zoo is easy to reach on the Red Line (exit Memorial Hermann Hospital/Houston Zoo Station).

Mom deserves a relaxing weekend, and METRO can help with that by providing transportation that doesn't involve hassles with traffic or parking.  Surprise her – use our Trip Planner to plan your day out, then just sweep her away.  It's going to be a wonderful weekend.

Event:  Houston Ballet's Don Quixote.  You know Mom would love a free performance by the Houston Ballet, and you can attend any evening this weekend.  Based on the novel by Cervantes, Don Quixote follows the adventures of the aging knight and his servant, Sancho Panza, as they set out on a quest to find the beautiful Dulcinea.  You'll need free tickets for the covered seating area, and these are available between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the box office.  In addition, there's always open seating on the hill.

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m.

Where: Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr.

Getting there*:

Bus – 56 Airline/Montrose

METRORail – Red Line (exit Hermann Park/Rice U Station)

Event: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.  This is the first weekend for a new production at the Ensemble Theatre, the story of a legendary blues singer and her band recording an album and talking about their own blues about race and exploitation.  Playwright August Wilson has won Pulitzer Prizes and Tony awards for his thought-provoking works, and this is rated PG-13 for adult language.  The play runs through June 3, and some productions are already sold out.  Tickets are available online.

When: Friday at 8 p.m. (LGBTQ/allies night), and Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. (Sunday is sold out)

Where:  Ensemble Theatre, 3535 Main St.

Getting there*:

Bus – 9 Gulfton/Holman

METRORail – Red Line (exit Ensemble/HCC Station)

Event: Mother's Day at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.  Mothers and grandmothers receive free admission to all displays and exhibitions at MFAH on Mother's Day.  This includes the two current ticketed exhibitions, Peacock in the Desert: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India, and Michelangelo and the Vatican.  In addition, the café is serving a Mother's Day brunch, and moms get a discount in the shop.  Reservations aren't needed.  Free admission also applies to Bayou Bend (6003 Memorial, take the 20 Canal/Memorial) and Rienzi (1406 Kirby Dr., take the 41 Kirby/Polk).

When: Sunday from 12:15 to 7 p.m.

Where: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet St.

Getting there*:
