The METRO Police Department is looking for a few good women and men to join its ranks.
Candidates must have already earned police certification since METRO does not have its own police academy, or candidates must be peace officers licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
Salary starts at $44,865 a year for a full-time officer and includes a rich benefits package of medical, dental, life and retirement savings plans, as well as training and resources.
What type of candidate is METRO seeking?
"What makes a good police officer at MPD is someone who is community service- oriented," said Capt. Felix Vara. "That's the biggest thing we look at. We serve all segments of society – from the guy who's homeless to the guy who is a CEO at a major corporation. They all ride METRO at some point. A person has to be able to adapt to a person's level and be able to understand the perspectives of all the patrons at METRO. It's a difficult job, but we think it's rewarding."
MPD officers mostly do street patrol – by foot, bicycle, Segway and car.
After the first year of employment, an officer's pay increases to $49,000 a year for up to 47 months. At month 48, it rises to $52,811.
Vara said METRO is a great place to see if law enforcement is a career that fits you. Twenty-six years ago, when he lost his geological drafting job, Vera became a police office and discovered a great match.
"It's a very stable place to work. Once you're here and you follow the rules, you can be here forever, for as long as you want. Benefits are awesome. And there are good people to work with," said Vara, who said his satisfaction comes in helping others and giving back.
METRO has 27 full-time openings, and 20 part-time openings. Interested? Read more details of the job here, and then apply online.
