METRO Celebrates Year of the Dog

While many of you may be making Valentine's Day plans for next Wednesday, Houston's Asian community is gearing up to celebrate its biggest holiday of the year: Lunar New Year.

This year it falls two days after Valentine's Day on Feb. 16. And METRO is planning to celebrate the Year of the Dog at two Lunar New Year festivals.

"We participate every year in this annual cultural event. We provide the community with information about METRO services, Q Cards and a chance to find out more about METRO," said Ramona Crayton, senior Public Affairs representative. "It's important for us to reach out to all communities and let them know the benefits of public transit in their daily lives."

We'll be at the Chinese Community Center at 9800 Town Park on Feb. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check out our booth – and then enjoy Asian foods, arts and crafts. Admission and parking are free.

And if you miss that, join us on Feb. 24 at the Viet Hoa Center at 8388 W. Sam Houston South Pkwy., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Judge Theresa Chang will participate in a red envelope ceremony, and you'll be entertained with classical dances, lion dances, traditional fashions and kung fu demonstrations.

If you were born in the Year of the Dog (1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006), your friends are lucky to celebrate with you. You are honest, loyal, reliable, independent and unafraid of daily difficulties.

Learn more about Asian culture by taking METRO to these festivals. Just get a free METRO Q® Fare Card at any of these retailers and load it with at least $5. Seniors 65 and older travel half price, as do students. Kids five years and under ride free, and seniors 70-plus ride free. Use the Google-powered Trip Planner to find your specific bus or train.
