Let's finish up December with classics – Houston Ballet's "The Nutcracker," a dose of Harry Potter adventures on the big screen, and lots of Disney's favorite characters in a colorful, musical show. We'll all get back to normal next week.
In addition, this weekend brings more New Year's Eve celebrations than I can count – all over the area, at prices ranging from free to the sky's the limit. There's a scattering of "Noon Year's Eve" events for the kids, too, and again they're all over the place.
METRO wants you to have a safe New Year's holiday, so bus and rail fares are free from 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 6 a.m. on Jan. 1. Check the Trip Planner for the routes/schedules that fit the events you want to attend. Happy 2018!
Event: "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert." Everyone will love seeing the high-definition movie accompanied by the Houston Symphony. It's the start of Harry's second year at Hogwarts, and he's joined by elves, pixies, giant snakes, fighting trees, flying cars…what more can I say.
When: Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Where: Jones Hall for the Performing Arts, 615 Louisiana St.

METRORail – Green Line and Purple Line (exit Theater District Station)
Event: "The Nutcracker." It's a don't-miss holiday classic – I never feel like it's the Christmas season if I don't see this ballet. The Houston Ballet presents a spectacular, opulent new production by Stanton Welch, but the characters and the adventure remain as timeless as ever. Bring the kids, but note that it's a two-hour production with one intermission. Tickets can be purchased through the website.
