Weekend Fun with METRO: Dec. 22–24

  MontageDec22-24.jpg

This is a guest post by Darla Bell, manager of Strategic Analysis in Communications & Marketing.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!  Maybe this weekend it will feel a little more like Christmas, too – I hear that dropping temperatures are on the way from the North Pole.  I'm recommending three events that the family can enjoy together this weekend.  There's a pantomime-type theater experience, a visit to Bayou Bend for Christmas activities, and tours of some of Houston's prettiest holiday lights.

Rely on METRO to act as your sleigh and reindeer in transporting you around town to these events, as well as to your own holiday gatherings.  The Trip Planner is your best source of information on which routes will take you wherever you want to go.

Let me remind you again that kids travel at half price with the student METRO Q® Fare Card – and kids age 5 and under ride free.  Whatever holiday you observe at this time of year – best wishes for a joyous celebration.

Event: "Sleeping Beauty and Her Winter Knight."  Theatre Under the Stars presents this interactive musical fairy tale with comedy, magic and a pop music score.  It's based on a European fairy tale about Princess Aurora, who is cursed into a 100-years-long nap by an evil fairy.  As you would expect, a handsome prince defeats the evil fairy and gives Aurora the kiss that wakes her.  It's fun for all ages, and tickets can be purchased online.

When: Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 2 and 7:30 p.m.

Where: Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby St.

Getting there*:

Bus – 30 Clinton/Ella, 44 Acres Homes, 48 Market, 85 Antoine/Washington, 160 Memorial City Express, 161 Wilcrest Express, 162 Memorial Express

METRORail – Green Line and Purple Line (exit Theater District Station)

Event: Christmas Village at Bayou Bend.  Enjoy the beauty of Bayou Bend while it's decorated as a winter wonderland.  There will be fun, holiday-themed tours of the house featuring actors, theatrical effects and Christmas decorations.  The whole family can enjoy games, cartoons at an outdoor movie station, visits with Santa, carolers, refreshments, and more.  Tickets can be purchased through the website.

When: Friday and Saturday, 5:30-10 p.m. (closed Sunday, Christmas Eve)

Where: Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, 6003 Memorial Dr.

Getting there*:

Bus – 20 Canal/Memorial

Event: Holiday Lights Tours.  See some of the best lighting displays in the city on a bus.  Meet representatives from Houston Wave on the benches at Market Square Park between 5:15 and 5:45 p.m., and board a bus to visit City Hall, Discovery Green, River Oaks and, time permitting, Woodland Heights.  You can get out and take pictures at each stop.  Food and drink can be carried on the bus (no glass), and holiday treats will be served.  Kids are welcome – if those age four and under can sit on your lap, they won't need a ticket.  Tickets can be purchased online, and a portion of the ticket fee will go to Buffalo Bayou Partnership.
