This is a guest post by Darla Bell, manager of Strategic Analysis in Marketing & Corporate Communications

Did everyone enjoy the snow last week?  I wouldn't mind another little snowfall like that, maybe on Christmas Eve.  For this weekend's activities, I'm suggesting some classical holiday music, some not-so-classical music at an innovative music/art festival, and a free Chanukah celebration at Discovery Green.  I'll bet you're busy now, too, with school holiday events and gatherings with family and friends.

Here at METRO, we're getting into the holiday spirit, and we're ready to help you go everywhere you want to go during this festive period.  Just type the addresses from/to where you want to travel into the Trip Planner, and go, go, go.  Don't forget that all the kids travel at half price with the student METRO Q® Fare Card – just another bonus of using public transportation.  Have a terrific weekend!

Event: Day for Night.  This innovative festival presents a mix of popular and fringe music, art installations and talks by performers, in an indoor/outdoor venue.  Musical headliners include Nine Inch Nails, Thom Yorke, Solange, and Justice – the list of acts is long – and dozens of art installations are scattered throughout the three-stage area.  You can buy food and beverages there, too.  I can't begin to tell you everything that's going on there this weekend, so check out the website.  Passes can be purchased online.

When: Friday from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday and Sunday from noon to 2 a.m.

Where: Barbara Jordan Post Office, 401 Franklin St.

Getting there*:

Bus – 20 Canal/Memorial, 32 Renwick/San Felipe, 48 Market, 82 Westheimer, 85 Antoine/Washington, 160 Memorial City Express, 161 Wilcrest Express, 162 Memorial Express

Event: Handel's "Messiah."  It's not Christmas unless you've heard Handel's "Messiah," and the Houston Symphony's performance of this work is a true holiday tradition.  Conductor Paul Agnew will lead the chorus, soloists and orchestra through this Baroque masterpiece to the final "Hallelujah."  Tickets can be purchased online.

When: Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Where: Jones Hall for the Performing Arts, 615 Louisiana St.

Getting there*:
Bus – 20 Canal/Memorial, 30 Clinton/Ella, 32 Renwick/San Felipe, 44 Acres Homes, 82 Westheimer, 85 Antoine/Washington, 102 Bush IAH Express, 160 Memorial City Express, 161 Wilcrest Express, 162 Memorial Express, 413 Greenlink Orange

Event: "Chanukah at Discovery Green." Celebrate Chanukah with arts and crafts, face painting, a balloon artist, food vendors, discount-priced ice skating, and live entertainment from Eli Marcus and Judah the Maccabee.  All children will receive Chanukah gifts.  Admission is free, and there's a form on the website to reserve the discounted skating tickets.
