Weekend Fun with METRO: Nov. 17–19

 MontageNov17-19.jpg

This is a guest post by Darla Bell, manager of Strategic Analysis in Communications & Marketing.

This is such a fun time of the year.  From now through the end of December, you'll find a host of festive things to do around Houston.

This week, my suggestions include the free screening of a hilarious holiday movie that will be great for the whole family, a Jane Austen-inspired theater experience for the romantics among us, and a free family festival that celebrates winter.  Now, we need a little more seasonable weather to put us in the right frame of mind.  Just keep your fingers crossed.

METRO is right there to help you enjoy the coming season – soon you'll see those bus operators in Santa hats - and we'll get you around town less expensively and with fewer hassles then you'd find if you drove.  Enter your location and destination into the Trip Planner for direction on the best way to travel – it's easy as (pumpkin) pie.  Have a great weekend!

Event: Movies at Miller: "Elf."  Sit back and enjoy the adventures of Buddy, the human who was raised as an elf, as he seeks his true place in the world and saves Christmas in New York.  The funny and charming story will kick your Christmas spirit into high gear, whether you're ready or not.  It's a free event, and no tickets are required.

When: Friday at 7 p.m.

Where: Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Dr.

Getting there*:
Bus – 56 Airline/Montrose

METRORail – Red Line (exit Museum District Station)

Event: "Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley."  This work is a sequel to Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," set two years after the novel's story with middle sister Mary as the unlikely heroine.  Tired of standing by as everyone else experiences romantic escapades, Mary finds hopes for independence and love when an unexpected guest joins the family Christmas celebrations at Pemberley.  Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the box office.

When: Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m.

Where: Main Street Theater, 2450 Times Blvd.

Getting there*:

Bus – 27 Shepherd, 41 Kirby/Polk, 84 Buffalo Speedway

Event: Frostival.  Discovery Green celebrates the opening of the ice rink and a new art installation, "Hello Trees!"  This free event includes live and DJ music, ice sculpture competitions, the chance to ice skate (skating rink requires an admission fee), and refreshments.  "Hello Trees!" transforms your voice messages into light and music along the live oak alleé that forms the heart of the park.  The Flea by

Night market will also be open for your shopping pleasure.

When: Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m.

Where: Discovery Green Conservancy, 1500 McKinney St.

Getting there*:

Bus – 40 Telephone/Heights, 41 Kirby/Polk

METRORail – Green Line and Purple Line (exit Convention District Station)
