We have a wide variety of suggestions for your first weekend of autumn – tragic ballet, outrageous comedy, and an outdoor free event for the whole family. Our Houston Ballet missed the first show of the season due to flood damage to its facility, but they’ve shifted over to the Hobby Center and are carrying on like the troupers we know they are. Saturday afternoon you can take the family to Discovery Green for outdoor fun and education, and Saturday night there’s a quartet of America’s most famous comedians ready to make you howl with laughter.
METRO is ready, too - to take you to all these events and more, so visit the Trip Planner to get the best bus or rail routes for wherever you’d like to go. Don’t forget that you still have a little time to take advantage of free fares for students K-college and parents riding with them – that offer ends on October 1. September has been a stressful month for many Houstonians. So, if you can, spend some time this weekend just enjoying yourself.
Event: “Mayerling.” The Houston Ballet has rescheduled the first performances of the new season to Hobby Center. “Mayerling” is a dramatic work dealing with obsession, unrequited love, and tragedy in 19th century Austria-Hungary, and Houston Ballet is the first North American dance company to present this work. It’s based on the 1889 incident involving the murder-suicide of the sole heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his 17-year-old mistress. Parental discretion is advised. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 713-227-2787.
